What is the story behind Duat?
In Ancient Egyptian mythology, “the Duat” is a dark subterranean realm that bears some similarity to other depictions of the underworld.
While it was regarded as being the land of the dead, it also housed a variety of other mythological gods.
It was believed that at the end of each day the bird-faced sun god Ra guided the sun into the Duat and began his nightly journey through the underworld.
During this journey he would revive the dead, battle fearsome foes, and ultimately transform into a the scarab-faced Khepri, god of the dawn.
Khepri would then guide the sun out of the Duat, rolling it up into the sky and beginning the cycle anew.
How does the mythos relate to the game?
The game of Duat takes place in the final stages of Ra’s journey through the underworld, just as he is undergoing his transformation from bird to scarab - hence our artwork featuring a winged scarab with talons.
Whichever player proves most careful and nimble is awarded with the honor of ushering in the dawn, while their opponent is knocked out of the sky and lost to the darkness of the Duat.
